Westminster Chaos Makes Premier League Halt Gambling Sponsorship Ban Vote

The recent political crisis in Westminster has impacted not only the politicians but the entire world, including sports. Because of the chaos, critical industry reforms are delayed. That is why The Premier League has postponed voting on the gambling and gaming sponsorship ban. In other words, some gambling companies risk losing their income from the shirt sponsorship, but the current crisis is somehow postponing this event.

The news sources have discovered the Premier League sent emails to the top twenty football clubs, announcing a new possible date for voting. Liverpool, Manchester United, and Arsenal have received the notifications. These giants now have more time to suggest their support for the possible limitations.

What Is the New Date Anyway?

Before the events, the vote should take place earlier this year. The new date for discussing the participants’ offers is July 26. It will be a shareholder meeting.

As you may know, various gambling parties united in trying to force Boris Johnson from office. The thing is, the gambling minister, Chris Philp, resigned with other colleagues. That is why the delay in the voting was obvious within the next few hours. After all, it is necessary to choose a new executive.

It was up to the gambling minister to present a white paper on gambling reform. One of the points for discussion was the question of eliminating the gaming brands showing up on the football merchandise. Even though Mr. Philp has lost “his own game,” the threat to the gambling brands still exists. Many experts wonder, “Can it be an attempt to exploit the recent political crisis in Westminster in favor of anti-gambling activists?” From some angles, it seems this way.

In fact, the Premier League itself is looking for the club’s support. Initially, the idea was to forbid placing gambling brands on the T-shirts of football players. The initiative could have stepped in within the upcoming 3 years (until 2025). It does not concern the current deals, provided they expire no later than 2025.

At least fourteen clubs from the league should support the legislation to be accepted. That is the basic requirement to meet.

What Are the Attitudes Toward the New Legislation?

Some members believe that the ban should be permanent. However, they do not exclude that the betting sponsorship can be back in a few years under certain circumstances.

Among all, gaming corporations will keep on advertising Ocean. In general, the problem matters to the giant UK clubs as some are simply “feeding” the gambling industry without considering the possible adverse consequences of such ads.

West Ham and Newcastle were sponsored by bookmakers last season. The most popular of them are SpreadEx Sport, Hollywood Bet, and Sportsbet.io.

One of the famous finance analysts in sports thinks that Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, and Chelsea will most probably vote in favor of the gambling sponsorship ban. They just do not have any relevant partnerships at the moment and risk losing nothing.

Anyway, the acceptance of this ban would put anti-gamblers in rage as it would not mean a full permanent ban on gambling in sports, in particular T-shirts with gaming brands during the world’s tournaments watched by millions if not billions of people.

As fairly admitted by the member of The Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS), “We’re currently reviewing a very serious gambling law to make sure it corresponds to the nuances of the digital age we are living in, and it is the most comprehensive point in the last fifteen years. Our organization will prepare and share a tech doc as our opinion on updated gambling legislation in the upcoming weeks.”
